Instagram Graph API for DMs: What You Can Automate

Instagram Graph API for DMs, explained without code: what Meta's official API lets you automate, the messaging-window rules, and when to use a tool.

Meta’s official Instagram API (the Instagram Graph API, part of its messaging platform) lets an authorized app receive comments and messages from Business or Creator accounts and reply by DM. In practice you can automate a DM in response to a comment, replies to incoming messages and replies to stories, always starting from an action by the person.

If you don’t code, what matters is knowing what the API allows, what it forbids, and whether it’s worth building yourself or using a tool that is already integrated. Rules change over time, so confirm details in Meta’s current documentation.

What the API lets you automate

  • Receive events. Comments on posts and Reels, direct messages and story replies arrive through webhooks.
  • Reply to a comment by DM. The “private reply” call sends a message to the person who commented, within a short period after the comment.
  • Reply to incoming messages inside the messaging window (currently 24 hours after the person’s last message; the docs list limited exceptions).
  • Send text, images, audio and buttons, depending on the supported message type.

What the API doesn’t allow

  • DMing people who never interacted with you.
  • Blasting your follower list.
  • Proactive messages after the window has closed, outside the documented exceptions.

That’s why “broadcast to all followers” doesn’t exist on Instagram. Details in Instagram broadcast automation: how it works.

What’s hard if you use the API directly

  1. Create an app on Meta and set up webhooks on a server that’s always up.
  2. Request the messaging and comments permissions and pass Meta’s app review to operate on other people’s accounts.
  3. Handle the messaging window, send limits, errors and retries.
  4. Store contacts, conversation state and metrics.
  5. Keep it all working when the API changes.

For a one-off automation on your own account, it can be done. For a service used by many customers, the maintenance cost is high.

When to use a tool

A tool already built on the official API handles the connection, webhooks, window and metrics, and you just build the flow. That’s Breeze: comment or story trigger, a visual flow with Condition, and lead capture. If you’d rather wire your own logic around it with n8n or Make, Breeze has an Integration/API node for that. For the safety rules, see is Instagram DM automation safe.

Breeze

Breeze uses Meta’s official API and never asks for your password. US$20/month outside Brazil (R$99 in Brazil), with a 3-day trial.

FAQ

Does the Instagram Graph API let you automate DMs? Yes, for Business or Creator accounts, from an action by the person (comment, incoming message, story reply) and within Meta’s messaging window.

Can I send mass DMs through the Instagram API? No. The API doesn’t allow proactive messages to people who haven’t interacted, or a broadcast to all followers.

Do I need to code to use the API? Directly, yes: an app, webhooks, permissions and Meta’s review. A tool like Breeze ships all that ready, with no code.

Does Breeze use the official API? Yes. The connection goes through Meta’s official authorization and Breeze never receives your password.

How much does Breeze cost? US$20 per month outside Brazil and R$99 per month in Brazil, with no per-contact fee.
